DesignCARE

Project
DesignCARE is a project funded by the Erasmus+ programme under the Key Action Cooperation Partnerships in Vocational Education and Training. Within the project, students of vocational medical schools from two schools in two EU countries (one at secondary and one at post-secondary level) will be trained and involved in participatory medicine through the development of communication skills and the acquisition of diversity competence skills.
The new DesignCARE curriculum can be integrated into existing medical programmes of secondary and post-secondary vocational schools, with the potential to create new, adaptable and innovative study programmes at higher levels, preparing students for their future working environment in the healthcare sector.

Goals
The main objective is to design, pilot, implement and evaluate teaching and learning strategies and resources for students in secondary and higher medical vocational schools, through the development of specialized educational tools, relevant and in line with new trends in the medical field, which will help them engage in participatory medicine through the competence of communication and diversity.
Three specific objectives:
1. Promoting the development of student engagement in participatory medicine through communication skills and in accordance with the principles of responsible research and innovation (RRI), in vocational schools, using inclusive, collaborative design thinking as an innovative educational strategy.
2. Strengthening competence for diversity in professional medical education, both for students and teachers.
3. Training teachers to be able to prepare students for the work environment in the new framework in the medical field by teaching and providing guidance for acquiring these skills.
Project results
The aim of the DesignCARE project is to create three project results:
-
increasing the capacities and competencies of partner institutions for the development and implementation of a new teaching module on participatory medicine through design thinking and the principles of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI);
-
fostering internationalisation within partner institutions, increasing the visibility of partner institutions at the EU level, and educating the first generation of students in vocational medical education at partner institutions trained in participatory medicine and RRI principles;
-
developing two key transversal skills: communication competence and diversity competence, for both teachers and students of vocational schools.
In addition to the above, an important objective of the project is to train teachers to design courses that encourage skills development, inquiry-based learning, creativity, and collaboration among peers and between students and teachers. The intention is to equip teachers with the ability to use inclusive, collaborative design thinking methods as an innovative educational strategy.
